Our group Zimbaremabwe, is grounded in the traditional Mbira music of Zimbabwe. Led by Linos Wengara Magaya, the band includes members from Zimbabwe, the UK and Cameroon. Our instruments include, Mbira, Vocals, Drums, Guitar, Bass, Sax, Keys. We are based in Brighton. We approach our performances with a ranges of styles, from very traditional Mbira music, with songs in the Shona language, to our Reggae sets. We try to make Reggae with the spirit and integrity of early roots music, coupled with the punch and energy of modern Ragga, plus the added addition of Mbira in the mix. (Mbira is the traditional thumb piano instrument of Zimbabwe). Our group is made of seasoned musicians and has performed at a variety of festivals and venues; in the last couple of years Solfest, Shambala, Secret Garden Party, Glastonberry, Tribal Earth, Sidmouth Folk Festival, Out of this World (Rhythm Tree); a variety of cultural events including Mela festivals and carnivals plus gigs both large and small. We can offer full band performances, or a much smaller lineup, as we often travel as a duo or three piece, particularly to perform a mellower acoustic set, with more emphasis on the Zimbabwean vibes in our music. To complement our performances we can also offer workshops in a variety of mediums, Mbira playing, Drumming, Dance, Singing, Storytelling.
